Hannibal Barca was one of the great generals of ancient times. After his father led Carthage in the First Punic War, Hannibal took over the leadership of Carthaginian forces against Rome. He fought a series of successful battles until he reached (but did not destroy) the city of Rome. Later, he returned to Carthage, where he led his forces less successfully. Once the Second Punic War ended with his return to Carthage, however, Hannibal became a wanted man. Sought for arrest by the Roman Senate, he lived the rest of his life one step ahead of the Empire. In Rome, Emperor Scipio was accused by the Senate of sympathizing with Hannibal. He defended Hannibals reputation for a time, but it became clear that the Senate would demand Hannibals arrest. Hearing of this, Hannibal fled Carthage for Tyre in B.C.E. 195. Later he moved on to become a counselor to Antiochus II, King of Ephesus. Antiochus, fearing Hannibals reputation, put him in charge of a naval war against Rhodes. After losing a battle and seeing defeat in his future, Hannibal feared that he would be turned over to the Romans and fled to Bithynia: A conquered man, he flees headlong into exile, and there he sits, a mighty and marvellous suppliant, in the Kings antechamber, until it please His Bithynian Majesty  to awake!(Juvenal, Satires) Hannibals Death by Suicide When Hannibal was in Bithynia (in modern-day Turkey), he helped Romes enemies try to bring the city down, serving the Bithynian King Prusias as a naval commander.  At one point, Romans visiting Bithynia demanded his extradition in B.C.E. 183.  To avoid that, he first tried to escape: When Hannibal was informed that the kings soldiers were in the vestibule, he tried to escape through a postern gate which afforded the most secret means of exit.  Ã‚  He found that this too was closely watched and that guards were posted all round the place.(Livy, History of Rome) Hannibal said, Let us ease the Romans of their  continual dread and care, who think it long and tedious to await the  death of a hated old man, and then drank poison, which he may have kept hidden under a gem on a ring. Homer uses several epithets, or nicknames, along with the name â€Å"Odysseus† as the story unfolds in both tales. Three of these include the descriptive epithet â€Å"wily Odysseus,† the laudative epithet â€Å"Odysseus, the great tactician,† and the patronymic epithet â€Å"Odysseus Laertiades.† Besides their obvious descriptive qualities, each of these epithets function to amplify, enhance, or characterize the hero. Having a High Self-Esteem Essay Self esteem is instilled in us at a young age. My mom always taught me how important it was to have confidence in myself and that no matter what anyone thought, it’s always important to believe in myself. If you don’t have confidence in yourself its hard to look in the mirror and think wow, I look great today. Improving your self esteem increases your confidence and it’s the first step towards a happy life. Self concept and who we think we are is very important in ones life. When I say I am ambitious, I am amazing, I am goal oriented, I am loving, I use these words to describe myself because I am confident in myself and believe these things. The characteristics we use to describe ourselves and how we view ourselves are important because it relates to how we act and communicate with people. Self esteem is important because it influences how we approach people and how you react in communications and relationships. As a child, if people such as classmates or siblings make fun of you or made you feel negative about yourself, you will believe these negative things and in some way let it shape your life. We are more likely to believe things once weve heard them repeatedly and especially from the people who we find to be credible. In most cases, one cares how they look in the eyes of other people. You may not even realize but when you put on makeup, dress a certain way or ask someone if â€Å"these jeans make you me look fat? † This is because you are concerned how others may view you. If someone tells you yes, those jeans make you look fat; you may begin to view yourself as less attractive. If that someone is a credible person and they say the jeans look good on you, you will feel appealing. Society and the people around you can alter your self esteem, unless you are just a cocky individual and nobody’s opinion matter. This refers to Charles Cooley’s, The Looking Glass Self; you see the image of yourself that others reveal to you. In order to possess a positive or healthy self concept you must know yourself, love yourself and be true to yourself. How you view yourself determines how you will experience life. If you see yourself in a positive and healthy way, your life experiences will be positive and healthy. Sometimes I feel like its okay to have high self esteem but not always be confident in yourself. Personally, I feel like I have my good days and my bad days, especially on a good hair day. I feel like a super model on a good day and a homeless person on a bad day. It’s important to have confidence in yourself because if you don’t, nobody else will. I am a great friend. Whenever a friend of mine needs a shoulder to lean on or a favor, I feel like I am always there to help them. The more I feel like I am a good friend and my friends agree with this, this is my self fulfilling prophecy. My prediction is fulfilling because I am acting on this as if it were true. Society shapes us in many ways. On instagram recently there was a challenge called â€Å"#PrettyFaceChallenge. Similar to the Ice bucket challenge, but has less meaning. The idea is for woman to post a collage of pictures of themselves wearing no makeup and using no filter. The goal is to nominate your friends whom you choose to be pretty. Than they do the challenge if they choose and nominate their friends as well. This is society shaping us by having our friends decide if were pretty. In a way it’s boosting our self esteem by being nominated and â€Å"feeling pretty. † I am motivated. I am a hard worker, I have drive, I have ambition. I have nice skin, I have great communication skills, and I am a great partner. For the purpose of this work I will focus my attention on management and leadership skills, that any good early years practitioner should possess in order to organise/hold the event of parents evening. Working in partnership with parents Constructive working relationships between teachers and parents can enhance adults knowledge and understanding of children and children’s learning opportunities, and so contribute to children’s learning and wellbeing at home and in the setting. Children who see their parents working closely together with their teachers â€Å"gain a sense of continuity and of being cared for† and experience a â€Å"trusting and secure environment in which they can learn and grow† (Whalley the Pen Green Centre Team, 2001). Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological model of human development offers a theoretical rationale for teachers and parents working in close collaboration. Inclusion†¦.. Purpose and outcome Early childhood practitioners are often reluctant to see themselves as leaders and managers. However, all those who work with young children and their families, whatever their level of experience and competence, have to undertake both of these roles on a daily basis. Parents evening is the perfect example of these two roles â€Å"played† by the same person. This is one of the best opportunities I have as practitioner in building relations with the parents. Why? Because if the parents are in agreement with my methods of practice/teaching, I’ve brought learning home. Researching Effective Pedagogy in the Early Years (Siraj-Blatchford, Sylva, Muttock, Gilden, Bell, 2002), found that children’s cognitive attainment benefited when parents were involved in children’s learning activities at home. Again the reformed EYFS(2012) has set out to raise the bar of just how influential parents’ role is in their child’s learning and development. Effective leaders will respond to this by reviewing their setting’s work with families to ensure strong engagement. The above ideas has been the foundation of organizing my first parents evening at my new setting. Although the event took place in September( next one due in June), the time coincide with the new EYFS coming into place and myself starting my new job at University of Warwick Nursery about the same time. Although I am a confident person, the likes of starting a new job, new EYFS coming into place, key children/families( of whom 4 out of 5had English as a second language, with very little or no knowledge of what EYFS is or how the nurseries are operating in UK), made me a bit anxious. I had to find a strategy which allowed me to be efficient, sounded knowledgeable and be professional. Having the liberty from the setting manger to conduct my parents evening, into whatever manner suits me and the families involved, the key for me at that particular time was called ORGANIZED. Before holding meeting with parents, any practitioner would consider what purpose it will serve and what will be the most effective method of achieving your goals. Good communication must have a clear purpose. †¢give information †¢consult †¢generate ideas †¢gather information †¢educate/help Parent and key worker meetings Early years settings tend to organise parent and key worker meetings on a regular basis and in a more structured way. Again, the timing of these meetings will depend on the parents daily routines and commitments, and the staff team will have to be flexible when arranging them. I have tried to be responsive to the needs of all individuals when arranging the timing for meetings. Because of the issue of confidentiality and because for most of the families English is a second language, I decided to have meetings with each family, rather than a group meeting. A little office was made available for the times booked and had a presentation running in the background ( appeals to all learning styles) for extra visual information; the main purpose was it introduce the EYFS, areas of learning, activities(see if any disagreement towards celebrations, messy play,etc) and how can be extended at home. See appendix Again, careful thought needs was given to †¢objectives (why) †¢audience (who) †¢content (what) †¢timing (when) environment (where). From my experience, these meetings offer an opportunity for the practitioner and parents to gather information, share their observations and to consider the implications of these in terms of planning for the childs learning. They are conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and practitioners should act as genuine listeners, responding to what they hear from the parent and not allowing discussions to be driven by a pre-set agenda based on what has been observed in the nursery. I am trying to use a business technique called the praise praise sandwich. Start with something positive about the child, ask parents of any weak points/areas for improvement , we discuss around this and get an agreement of how together we can help the child move forward and generally improve. Finally I summarise our agreement, and finish with a reminder of their positive. Although we are gathering lots of written and recorded evidence for the child`s learning, is right to say that in Early Years , 50% of the information is mentally recorded by the key worker; and this extra information I found to be really appreciated by parents/families as a prove of knowing/understanding that particular child. During individual meetings with parents, time is set aside for looking at the implications of observations from home and nursery. Planning together for childrens learning will result in a more holistic approach, an enhanced curriculum and continuity for the children. There are opportunities to look at the childs learning journeys and to talk about appropriate provision and support for the childs developmental stage. Where a pattern of behaviour or personal learning interest has been identified, the key worker and parent are discussing experiences that could be offered at home and in the nursery in the hope that they would engage the child and further extend learning. We also share with the parents information about the Foundation Stage curriculum and about young children as learners. explain how the setting plans and assesses a childs learning within the six areas of learning discuss the importance of the learning process emphasise the importance of child-initiated learning talk about schemas discus appropriate expectations and contexts for learning. It is common sense that practitioners should have confidence in their presentation skills and their knowledge of child development and early learning. When English is a second language Parents evening is also an excellent time for the child’s key person to discuss the child’s level and understanding of English, the use of their home language at nursery and the use of English at home. During this time the key person may have some questions on how the child is progressing at home. These can be important as if the child is using little or no English at the setting it is harder to know their level of development. I believe that good relationships with parents helps to aid our knowledge of the child and so provide them with the best possible care and education. To support inclusion and make each child feel valued, I initiated a little project. In the classroom we have got a board on which we have a data base of common words used in all the languages our children are speaking at home. We asked the parents for any words that they feel the child and key person may need while at nursery. This gives the key person some simple understanding and being more aware if the child is asking for something or trying to explain something. This also helps the key person to build a relationship with the child. It has proven to be a success and now it has been extended to all the classrooms. In the United Kingdom, the Pen Green Centre for Under Fives and their Families is well known for its work in involving families in children’s learning, as well as for parents being supported themselves. Pen Green tries to follow a process: whereby all the important adults in a child’s life give each other feedback on what seems to be centrally important to the child, and how and what they are learning in the home and in the nursery (Whalley and the Pen Green Centre Team, 2001). In this way, children are offered a challenging and stimulating environment in both settings that draws on each party’s understanding and scrutiny. On the other hand, there are also negative aspects to this situation. Because Marji was completely immersed in the war at such a young age she began to lose sight of what was truly important to her in life very early on. In the beginning of the novel, at the age of six, she was already sure that she was the last prophet. She wanted to become a prophet because she wanted to change things: â€Å"because our maid did not eat with us, because my father had a Cadillac, and above all because my grandmother’s knees always ached. † (Satrapi 6). This just goes to show that at this point God was a huge part of her life, but once the protests began, this did not last for much longer. Marji began to ignore God and push him away, which is accurately shown in â€Å"The Sheep† through Marji’s anger towards God that caused her to drift away and focus on things that she found more important, like war. Religion began as an essential part of Marji’s life, but by the end of the novel it was something that she had completely turned her back on and lost touch with. Overall, the war was proven to have a strong effect on Marji’s life and has helped her grow from the small little girl with dreams of being a prophet, to a strong and independent woman that she has become by the end of the novel. Marji was not only affected by war, but also by the many influential people in her life throughout the story. Whether it be her Uncle Anoosh, her grandmother, her parents, or her friends, it’s those that you surround yourself with that influence your life the most. For example, one day Marji’s parents told her about her Uncle Anoosh that she had never met. The two immediately had a very close bond that stayed strong even through their final few moments together. He taught her about the war, and through his stories and actions he taught her to believe in herself, and her ideas no matter what any one else thought. Anoosh believed in the revolution wholeheartedly and even though it may not have turned out great for him, his dedication, perseverance, and stubbornness are all traits that Marji later portrayed throughout the book. Another person who greatly impacted Marji’s life was her grandmother. She had a great influence on Marji who looked up to her, and knew that her grandmother was always there to look out for her. Marji’s grandmother had a strong moral sense that showed in every situation. She frequently acts as Marji’s conscience throughout the story; for example, in the film when Marji was about to get caught by the Guardians of the Revolution, she did whatever was necessary in order to avoid persecution. But her grandmother was quick to tell her that what she had done as wrong, and had to be set straight. Her grandmother keeps her grounded, and helps her remember who she is and where she comes from when she loses sight of it. She taught her about humility, integrity, and that in â€Å"Life, everyone always has a choice. Even though she may not have showed these characteristics in the given situation, they are still evident traits that Marji acquired through the course of the book thanks to her grandmother. Finally, the Iranian government was something that surrounded Marji and drastically changed her life. Although the physical people of the government may not have been around her, it was the rules and regulations set by those in power that became overwhelmingly present in her life over the course of the revolution. The way they were forced to dress, the pass-times that were forbidden, and all of the other limitations put on the public made the government’s presence definite. This taught Marji to be a criminal in the eyes of the law, but also that if you believe in something, you should fight for it. There were many times in which Marji shared new and different ideas to those of the Iranian government that everyone else followed. She learned to test society and be different, and that is one of the most important traits a person can have, individuality. This proves that people that influence your life may not always influence it in a positive way, but over all that’s how you become the person you are. By examining both the novel and the film it becomes clear that Marji develops countless characteristics throughout the book, due to many different aspects of her life. She has become the person she is today because of the people and the war that surrounded and influenced her ever day. So, in the end it is important to remember that each day can be used to improve yourself and those around you because even though you may not be able to see it, the impact is incredible.
